How to trim or cut a video online
- Drop your video in. A preview appears with two handles under it.
- Drag the handles to the start and end of the part you want, or play the video and press “Use current frame”. You can also type times such as 1:05.5.
- Press “Trim video” and save the MP4.
Fast cut or precise cut?
Videos are stored as key frames (complete pictures) with changes in between. A fast cut copies the video without re-encoding: it’s nearly instant and keeps the original quality exactly, but it has to start at a key frame, so the clip may begin up to a couple of seconds before the point you chose. A precise cut re-encodes the kept part so it starts exactly where you set it. It takes longer and uses high-quality settings, so the difference is hard to see.
For sharing a highlight, a fast cut is almost always fine. For a clip that must start on an exact word or moment, tick “Precise cut”.
Trim and compress in one go
Trimming is the best way to get a sharp video under a size limit, because the limit is shared across fewer seconds. On the compressor, tick “Trim the video first”, choose the part to keep, then compress: one step, one file. That’s ideal for Discord clips and WhatsApp videos.
When to shorten a video
Use it as a quick video cutter whenever a clip is longer than it needs to be:
- Game highlights: cut the 20 seconds that matter from a long recording.
- Phone videos: remove the fumbling at the start and the pocket shot at the end.
- Meeting and lecture recordings: keep only the part someone needs to see.
- Social media limits: fit time limits on Reels, Stories, TikTok or X.
Trim MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV
You can trim MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and M4V videos, so it works as an MP4 cutter and a MOV trimmer alike. The result is always an MP4. Videos that are already H.264 or HEVC can be cut without re-encoding; other formats, such as WebM, are re-encoded to H.264 so the trimmed clip plays everywhere.
Questions
Does trimming reduce quality?
Not with a fast cut: the video is copied without re-encoding. A precise cut re-encodes at high quality.
Why does my trimmed clip start a little early?
A fast cut starts at the nearest key frame. Tick “Precise cut” for an exact start.
Can I trim and compress at the same time?
Yes. On the compressor, tick “Trim the video first” before compressing.
Can I cut out a section in the middle?
Not yet. You can keep one continuous part of the video.
How do I shorten a video?
Drop it in, drag the handles to the part you want to keep, and press Trim video. Shortening also makes the file smaller.
How do I cut an MP4 video?
The same way: drop the MP4 in, set the start and end, and save. MP4 files are cut without re-encoding.
Is it free?
Yes. Free, with no watermark and no sign-up.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The tool runs inside your browser and uses your device’s own video encoder. Your file is read from your device, processed there and saved back. You can confirm this in your browser’s network panel: nothing is sent while a video is processed.
Which browsers does it work in?
It works best in Chrome and Edge on a computer. It needs a browser feature called WebCodecs. If your browser doesn’t have it, the page tells you before you start.
