How to convert a GIF to MP4
- Drop your GIF in. You’ll see its size, dimensions and number of frames.
- Choose how many times to repeat it (MP4s don’t loop on their own in every app) and a background for transparent areas.
- Press Convert to MP4 and save.
Why convert GIFs to MP4?
GIF is a 1980s image format. It stores every frame as a separate picture with at most 256 colours, so animations get huge quickly: a 5-second GIF can easily be 10–20 MB. MP4 with H.264 only stores what changes between frames, so the same animation is typically 80–95% smaller, with smoother colours.
- Faster websites: swapping GIFs for MP4s is one of the quickest page-speed wins.
- Upload limits: many platforms cap GIF size but happily take a small MP4.
- Social media: Instagram and some other apps don’t accept GIF uploads at all, but accept MP4.
Looping and transparency
GIFs loop forever by default; MP4 players usually play once. Choose 2× to 5× to repeat short animations inside the video, or set your website’s video player to loop. MP4 with H.264 can’t be transparent, so transparent areas are filled with white or black.
Going the other way? Use video to GIF.
GIFs on websites
If you run a website, replace large GIFs with a short MP4 in a video element set to autoplay, loop, muted and play inline. It looks the same to visitors but loads many times faster, which helps your page speed scores.
