How to convert MOV to MP4

  1. Drop your MOV (or WebM, MKV, M4V) file in.
  2. Check what will happen: a quick repackage, or a full re-encode.
  3. Press “Convert to MP4” and save the new file.

Why it’s usually instant

MOV and MP4 are just containers: boxes that hold the video and sound. iPhone videos usually hold H.264 or HEVC video and AAC sound, which MP4 can hold too. So instead of re-encoding, we move the same video into an MP4 box. It takes seconds and keeps the original quality exactly.

When to tick “Maximum compatibility”

Newer iPhones record in HEVC (H.265) to save space. Macs, iPhones and most new phones play it, but many Windows PCs need a paid add-on, and some editing apps and older TVs refuse it. Tick “Maximum compatibility” to re-encode to H.264, which plays everywhere. It takes longer because every frame is re-encoded.

WebM and MKV files

WebM files from screen recorders and browsers usually use VP8 or VP9 video, which MP4 players don’t expect. These are always re-encoded to H.264 so the result plays everywhere.

Questions

Will converting reduce the quality?

Not when the video is repackaged: the picture is copied as is. A re-encode is done at high quality and is very hard to tell apart from the original.

Can I convert HEIC photos or Live Photos?

Not yet. This tool converts video files only.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The tool runs inside your browser and uses your device’s own video encoder. Your file is read from your device, processed there and saved back. You can confirm this in your browser’s network panel: nothing is sent while a video is processed.

Which browsers does it work in?

It works best in Chrome and Edge on a computer. It needs a browser feature called WebCodecs. If your browser doesn’t have it, the page tells you before you start.
