How to extract audio
- Choose the format: MP3, M4A or WAV.
- Drop your video in. You’ll see roughly how big the audio file will be.
- Press “Extract”, listen to the preview, and save.
Video to MP3, M4A or WAV: which should I choose?
| Format | Best for | Size per minute |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 | Sharing and playing anywhere: phones, cars, speakers | about 1–2.4 MB |
| M4A (AAC) | Apple devices, podcasts, smaller files at the same quality. Often copied straight from the video without re-encoding | about 1.2 MB |
| WAV | Editing in audio or video software; no compression at all | about 11 MB |
If you’re not sure, choose MP3. If the video came from an iPhone or most cameras, M4A is often extracted in seconds with no quality change, because the sound is already AAC.
Ways to use an audio extractor
- Lectures, talks and sermons to listen to on the go.
- Interviews and voice notes to transcribe.
- Your own music and performances.
- Sound effects or ambience for editing projects (use WAV).
Only extract audio you made or have permission to use.
Quality
An audio file can’t sound better than the sound in the video. Phone and camera recordings are usually AAC at 128–256 kbps, so MP3 at 192 kbps or M4A captures everything there is to hear; WAV doesn’t add detail, it just avoids further compression while you edit.
Questions
Which audio format is best?
MP3 for sharing, M4A for smaller files on Apple devices, and WAV for editing.
Is extracting M4A lossless?
Often, yes. When the video’s sound is already AAC, it’s copied without re-encoding.
Why is the WAV file so big?
WAV is uncompressed: about 11 MB per minute of stereo sound.
Can I convert MP4 to WAV?
Yes. Choose WAV, drop the MP4 in and save. WAV is best for editing software.
How do I convert video to audio on my phone?
On Android, open this page in Chrome. On iPhone it depends on your iOS version; a computer always works.
Can I extract only part of the sound?
Trim the video first with the trim tool, then extract the audio.
Is it free?
Yes. Free, with no watermark and no sign-up.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The tool runs inside your browser and uses your device’s own video encoder. Your file is read from your device, processed there and saved back. You can confirm this in your browser’s network panel: nothing is sent while a video is processed.
Which browsers does it work in?
It works best in Chrome and Edge on a computer. It needs a browser feature called WebCodecs. If your browser doesn’t have it, the page tells you before you start.
