How to compress a video to 8 MB
- The size is already set to 8 MB. You can change it under “Custom size”.
- Drop your video in and check the expected resolution and quality.
- Press Compress, then save the MP4. It’s guaranteed to be under 8 MB.
Where a 8 MB limit comes up
Eight megabytes was Discord’s free limit for years, and it’s still the cap on plenty of forums, support forms, older chat apps and website upload fields. It’s the smallest common limit, so it’s also the one where length matters most.
Common uses: Older Discord servers and bots, forum and help-desk attachments, website contact forms.
What quality fits in 8 MB?
The size limit is shared across the whole video, so the longer it is, the less data each second gets. This is what to expect:
| Video length | Output | Video bitrate | Quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 seconds | 1080p | 3.9 Mbps | Good |
| 30 seconds | 720p | 1.9 Mbps | Good |
| 1 minute | 480p | 0.9 Mbps | OK |
| 2 minutes | 360p | 0.4 Mbps | Low |
| 5 minutes | Too long for 8 MB: trim it or pick a bigger size | ||
| 10 minutes | Too long for 8 MB: trim it or pick a bigger size | ||
For a 1080p source with sound at 8 MB. Removing the sound gives the picture about 128 kbps more.
At 8 MB, keep clips under about a minute. Short game highlights, reactions and screen captures of a single step all fit with good quality.
How we hit the size exactly
We work out the bitrate from your video’s length so the file lands just under 8 MB, with a little room for the MP4 container. If the encoder overshoots, it automatically tries again slightly smaller, so you never get a file that’s too big.
Questions
Will my video definitely be under 8 MB?
Yes. The size is checked after encoding, and if it’s over, the video is re-encoded slightly smaller automatically.
Why is my video “too long for this size”?
Below a certain bitrate the picture becomes unwatchable. Long videos can’t fit 8 MB at a usable quality, so trim the video or choose a bigger size.
Can I compress a video without losing quality?
Any compression removes some detail; that’s how files get smaller. What matters is whether you can see it. We use the full size you allow, keep the frame rate, and step down resolution only when it will look sharper than a blocky full-size picture. For short clips the difference is usually invisible on a phone.
Is there a watermark?
No. The video you save is exactly what the encoder produced: no watermark, no logo, no sign-up.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The tool runs inside your browser and uses your device’s own video encoder. Your file is read from your device, processed there and saved back. You can confirm this in your browser’s network panel: nothing is sent while a video is processed.
