1. FitVideo: no upload, no daily limit
FitVideo compresses and converts in your browser, so your video never leaves your device and there’s no daily allowance to run out of. Choose a target such as Discord’s 20 MB or Gmail’s 25 MB and the result is guaranteed to fit. It also converts MOV, MKV, WebM and HEVC to MP4, trims, mutes, rotates, extracts audio and makes GIFs. It needs a modern browser, and works best in Chrome or Edge on a computer. FitVideo and FreeConvert compared.
2. HandBrake: the free desktop classic
HandBrake is free, open-source software for Windows, Mac and Linux. Like FitVideo it works on your own computer, and it exposes every encoder setting. It’s the best choice when you want precise control, and more than most people need for a quick fit to a size limit.
3. CloudConvert: the widest range of formats
CloudConvert handles hundreds of formats, including documents and images. The free plan gives 10 conversions a day with files up to 1 GB. Files are uploaded to its servers.
4. 8mb.video: Discord sizes in any browser
A simple site for getting clips under Discord’s limits, with no watermark. Videos are uploaded and processed on its servers, and free users can wait in a queue. It’s a good fallback if your browser can’t run FitVideo. FitVideo and 8mb.video compared.
5. Clideo and 6. VEED: online editors
Both are online editors with compressors built in, and both are useful when you also want to add text, music or captions. Their free plans add a watermark to exports; paid plans remove it. Files are uploaded.
7. ezgif: for GIFs
ezgif is the best free toolbox for editing GIFs, with video tools that cut, mute and resize files up to 200 MB. Most tools upload your file; Video to GIF also has a local processing mode. FitVideo and ezgif compared.
