How to remove audio from a video
- Drop your video in.
- Check that “Remove sound” is selected.
- Press “Remove sound” and save the MP4.
For MP4 and MOV videos, the picture is copied without re-encoding, so it takes seconds and the quality is identical to the original. Other formats are converted to H.264 MP4 at the same time.
Why remove the sound?
- Background noise, wind or private conversations you don’t want to share.
- Music you don’t have rights to, which can get videos blocked or muted on social media.
- Adding your own soundtrack or voice-over in another app.
- Silent video loops for websites, presentations and screens in shops or offices.
- Smaller files: removing the sound saves a little space and gives the picture more room when compressing.
Mute video and compress in one step
If you’re also making the video smaller, use the compressor and tick “Remove sound”. The space the sound used goes to the picture instead, which helps most at small sizes like Discord’s 20 MB or WhatsApp’s 16 MB.
Want the sound instead?
To do the opposite and keep only the sound, use Extract audio or Video to MP3.
Muting part of a video
This tool removes the sound from the whole video. To silence only part of it, trim the video into the parts you need with the trim tool, or use a full video editor.

No. The tool runs inside your browser and uses your device’s own video encoder. Your file is read from your device, processed there and saved back. You can confirm this in your browser’s network panel: nothing is sent while a video is processed.
Which browsers does it work in?
It works best in Chrome and Edge on a computer. It needs a browser feature called WebCodecs. If your browser doesn’t have it, the page tells you before you start.
