How to rotate a video 90 degrees

  1. Drop your video in. A preview appears.
  2. Choose 90° right, 180° or 90° left. The preview turns to show the result.
  3. Press “Rotate video” and save the MP4.

Why phone videos end up sideways

Phones record in the direction the camera sensor faces and add a note to the file saying which way up to play it. If you started recording with the phone flat on a table, turned it mid-recording, or the orientation lock was on, that note can be wrong. Some apps and websites also ignore the note entirely, so a video that looks fine on your phone appears sideways elsewhere.

Is rotating lossless?

For MP4 and MOV videos with H.264 or HEVC, usually yes: FitVideo updates the rotation in the file without re-encoding the picture, which takes seconds and keeps the original quality. Other formats, such as WebM, are re-encoded to H.264 MP4 so the rotated video plays everywhere.

Rotate or flip a video?

Rotating turns the picture; flipping mirrors it. If text in your video reads backwards, as it often does in front-camera selfies, you need a flip rather than a rotation. Flipping is planned for a future update.

Which way should I rotate?

  • The top of the picture is on the left: rotate 90° right.
  • The top of the picture is on the right: rotate 90° left.
  • It’s upside down: rotate 180°.

The preview updates as you choose, so you can check before saving.

After rotating

A portrait video that was sideways is now properly vertical, which suits Reels, TikTok and Stories. If it also needs to be smaller for WhatsApp or Discord, run the rotated file through the compressor next.

Questions

Does rotating a video reduce the quality?

Usually not. MP4 and MOV videos are rotated without re-encoding the picture.

Why is my video still sideways in one app?

A few apps ignore rotation information. Tick nothing extra: FitVideo saves a standard MP4, which nearly all apps respect. If one still doesn’t, compress the video afterwards, which re-encodes it upright.

Can I rotate by any angle?

You can rotate by 90°, 180° or 270° (90° left), which covers sideways and upside-down videos.

Can I flip a mirrored video?

Not yet. Flipping is planned.

Can I rotate an MP4 or MOV video?

Yes. MP4 and MOV videos are rotated without re-encoding; WebM and MKV are converted to MP4.

How do I turn a sideways video upright?

If the top of the picture is on the left, rotate 90 degrees right; if it’s on the right, rotate 90 degrees left.

Is it free?

Yes. Free, with no watermark and no sign-up.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The tool runs inside your browser and uses your device’s own video encoder. Your file is read from your device, processed there and saved back. You can confirm this in your browser’s network panel: nothing is sent while a video is processed.

Which browsers does it work in?

It works best in Chrome and Edge on a computer. It needs a browser feature called WebCodecs. If your browser doesn’t have it, the page tells you before you start.
