How to cut an audio file
- Drop your audio file in.
- Drag the handles, type times such as 1:05.5, or play it and press “Use current position” at the start and end.
- Choose the format and press Cut audio.
Good uses
- Ringtones and alert sounds from your own recordings.
- Voice notes and interviews: remove the silence and set-up at the start and end.
- Podcast and lecture clips to share a key moment.
- Samples for music or video projects (save as WAV for editing).
Accurate cuts
Audio is cut to within a fraction of a second of the times you set. Saving as WAV keeps the cut part uncompressed; MP3 and M4A re-encode it at the quality you choose.
To cut a video instead, use the video trimmer.
Making a ringtone
iPhone ringtones must be under 40 seconds and in M4A (AAC) format; Android accepts MP3 of any reasonable length. Cut the part you want, choose M4A for iPhone or MP3 for Android, and save. On iPhone, import it with GarageBand or Finder; on Android, copy it to the Ringtones folder or choose it in Sound settings.
Tips for clean cuts
- Use the preview: play from just before your start point to check it begins on the beat or word you want.
- Leave a few tenths of a second of silence at the start and end; cuts mid-sound can click.
- For further editing, save as WAV so you don’t lose quality before your final export.
